AP Literature & Composition Syllabus
Welcome
Welcome parents and students to AP Literature and Composition. In this class, students will dive deeply into literature - novels, poetry, plays and various compositions. Along with developing literary skills in reading and writing, students will have a chance to actually earn college credit at the end of this course. This is a challenging, full year, three trimester course, and is a required part of participation on the ACE program.
The AP Exam
In May, thousands of students around the country will be taking AP exams. If a students gets a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam, they can earn credit at their collge, not have to take a college English course, and not have to pay for that class! In that case, passing the AP test can be worth between $1,000 - $3,000! The test costs between $60-$80, but is free for students who receive Free and Reduced lunch. More info on this in February.

Unit 1A: Origins of English Literature - The Bible, The Greeks, Beowulf
Unit 2A: The Short Story, Novel: The Bean Trees
Unit 3A: The Novel: Wuthering Heights
Unit 4A: Poetry
Unit 5A: Drama: The Piano Lesson
Unit 6B: The Great Gatsby
Unit 7B: More Short Stories (choice novel)
Unit 8B: Poetry; The Awakening
Unit 9B: Drama: Death of a Salesman
Unit 10C: Shakespeare: Macbeth
Unit 11C: Catcher in the Rye
Unit 12C: Test Prep Projects
Course Pack and Textbook: Students are responsible for a course pack booklet and a “Red Book” textbook. Students are responsible for these books for the entire year.
Reading Journal: All students will need a composition style notebook for this course.
Grading: Grading for the course will break down as follows:
Tests & Quizzes - 40%
Projects / Essays - 40%
Assignments/Class Work - 20%
Daily Journal - 20%
